Local Students Support Veterans for Flag Day

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ — Just ahead of Memorial Day and Flag Day, a cherished piece of local history has returned to its rightful place at VFW Post 6259. Thanks to the craftsmanship and community spirit of Governor Livingston High School students, the VFW’s 1955 retired flag drop box has been fully restored and is once again ready to serve residents of Berkeley Heights.

Led by Roman Peterson with help from Matias Quesnel and classmate Noah Rahal, the restoration was completed as part of the Advanced Woodworking program under teacher Mike Maresca. The students carefully brought the decades-old flag collection box back to life, preserving its original character while ensuring its durability for years to come.

This is more than just a woodworking project – it’s about honoring tradition and giving back to those who have served.

The restored flag drop box stands as a symbol of respect and service. Residents are encouraged to place worn and weathered American flags inside the box, where they will be collected and disposed of properly in accordance with the U.S. Flag Code.

Proper flag retirement is a significant tradition, especially as Memorial Day approaches—a time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. With Flag Day following on June 14, the timing of the restoration could not be more fitting.

As part of Flag Day observances, Mountain Park School in Berkeley Heights will host a celebration on June 13 at 8:40 a.m. Students who are members of Scouts are invited to wear their uniforms, and the school will be collecting American flags that are no longer suitable for display. These flags will be retired with dignity through the proper channels, such as the VFW’s newly restored flag drop box.

The VFW Post 6259 extends its heartfelt thanks to the students, their instructor, and the school for their thoughtful work. Their efforts are a meaningful gesture to the local veteran community and a testament to the values of respect, tradition, and civic responsibility.

For those with flags ready for retirement, the drop box is once again open and available at the Berkeley Heights VFW Post 6259 located on Locust Avenue.
